The T-Mobile Side Kick 2008 was codenamed "Gekko" before it was released to the market. A lot of people expected it to keep that name but T-Mobile decided to name it as the Sidekick. So what makes this device different from other Sidekicks?
On the hardware side, it remains largely the same. It has the swivel-out screen, controls and track ball found on previous models but it does have smaller footprint than older versions. The Sidekick 2008's keyboard are smaller and seems like a combination of the keyboards on the Sidekick LX and the Sidekick 3.
T-Mobile also emphasizes the new Sidekick's interchangeable shells. T-Mobile customers can personalize their Sidekick by using the company's web site to design their own custom shells ($15) or select one from pre-designed shells. Some users humorously commented that this option reminded them of beyblade, a toy with interchangeable shells.
The newest Sidekick also offers some well designed and intuitive such as email, instant messaging, picture messaging and video messaging. As expected form the latest version, the T-Mobile Sidekick 2008 offers more features than older versions.
Folks who would like to have a camera on their handsets can also consider this device. Granted it offers a typical two-megapixel camera for photos or video. It doesn't have a built in flash but the images it takes are decent. The images and video taken from the T-Mobile Sidekick can be sent to friends and family via email or MMS.
T-Mobile is offering this handset for $149.99 with a two-year agreement. This means that it's cheaper than the Sidekick LX despite offering more features. To wrap this up here are the key features of the T-Mobile Sidekick:
- Video recording
- Spell check
- Quick find
- Improved browser
- Enhanced IM
- Bluetooth A2DP
- 2.0 megapixel camera
- Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
