MMS for the AT&T iPhone

iPhone users have demanded support for Multimedia Messaging Service, or MMS since the day the touchscreen device landed on the market. However, it took almost three years before Apple and AT&T to announce that MMS for the AT&T iPhone is coming. The impending arrival of Multimedia Messaging Service was announced when the 3GS was introduced.

Unfortunately, it was announced that MMS for the AT&T iPhone will not be available at launch. The reason? Well, the carrier explained that the service will be available later this summer. Apparently, some system upgrades have to be completed to ensure that customers have the best experience with the service.

Well, it appears that those system upgrades are now complete. It has been announced that MMS for the AT&T iPhone will be available starting on September 25. On this date, an update will enable the iPhone 3G and 3GS to support the service. Subscribers will finally get this anticipated service in about three weeks.

The carrier also delivered an apology and explanation for the delay of MMS for the AT&T iPhone. The network architecture has been beefed up to ensure that it can handle the expected record volumes of Multimedia Messaging Service traffic and ensure an excellent experience at launch.

Big Blue also promised to work hard on keeping up with the growth in smartphone usage, data demand, new devices and applications.

Palm Pre Voice Dialing

The Palm Pre is a sophisticated phone that runs on a sophisticated OS. Well it's sophisticated enough for some authors to write books on how to use the Palm Pre and webOS. However, for all it's cool features and capabilities the Palm Pre still lacks some basic functions.

For instance, Palm Pre voice dialing was not available at launch. This surprised a lot of users because it's a basic feature and can be found in "dumb" phones. Perhaps it was left out because the carrier and the manufacture were in a hurry to release the smartphone. That might be spot on since it took about 6 minutes to release the webOS handset.

But hey, the lack of voice dialing was also one of the top complaints with the iPhone.

Voice dialing is a feature that allows users to speak a name to dial a number instead of entering a number manually or choosing it from the phone book. It's a useful feature for users who needs to make calls while driving.

Of course, Palm has recognized the problem. The company promised to deliver Palm Pre voice dialing can be added later through an over-the-air update. However, are there any solutions or steps on getting voice dialing before the update?

Well, there's a temporary Palm Pre voice dialing solution. It's the BlueAnt's V1 Voice Controlled Bluetooth Headset. This device can do Voice Command / Voice Dialing on the but is limited to 9 numbers.

Here are the steps on Palm Pre voice dialing via BlueAnt's V1 courtesy of the Everything Pre forum:

You can assign 7 of the 9 to preset names, i.e. (Call Home, Call Office, Call Favorite, Call Speed Dial 6, Call Speed Dial 7, Call Speed Dial 8 and Call Speed Dial 9), the last two are Call Googs 411 and Call Voicemail and are fixed.

You set the the 7 numbers by pressing and holding the Volume Down Button for 3 seconds after you are finished with the last call that you want to assign.

For example if my "home" just finished calling, I would press the vol down button for three seconds and a voice would ask me what preset I want to assign the last number received and I would reply..."Call Home."

You do this with the 6 other calls you receive and then you have all there is.

There you have it. It's not ideal but it works for now. I hope that Palm delivers voice dialing in an update soon.

OK, here's how the handset spies form UnwiredView acquired the info on these new Nokia mobile phones. Apparently, the webmaster from Nokia's Polish site inadvertently released the information on this two mobile phones for women. The image above was taken from the site.

Perhaps it was a honest mistake from the Polish Nokia webmasters part. Maybe it was a planned info leak to gain more attention for the handsets (these aren't Nseries devices) and make the mobile phone atmosphere more exciting. The Polish Nokia site has already taken down the page devoted to this mobile phones.

These cell phones for women were names Nokia 7510 and 7610 Supernova. However, experts say that the second phone named 7610 may be another mistake because Nokia already has a discontinued device bearing that name. The mobile phone maker has been known to revamp the old models and release them as new. However, since this mobile phone is completely new phone, in a new form factor, it's highly unlikely that it will bear a the same serial number that was bestowed to another device.

RIM's First Clamshell: BlackBerry KickStart

There have rumors that RIM is planning to launch their first clamshell smartphone. Recently, those rumors were confirmed when images of a new BlackBerry device circulated on the web.

So what? Images of new BlackBerry devices are always pop up online. Well, these new images show a BlackBerry CLAMSHELL ! It's the photographs of a flip phone that RIM has codenamed the KickStart.

These initial pictures informed mobile phone enthusiasts that the BlackBerry KickStart uses a SureType keyboard. They also suggest that the clamshell will sport a camera, external LCD, and a TrackBall devoted for navigation. It is expected that this handset will be launched in the third quarter of this year.

Updates and new photos immediately followed the first images of RIM"s BlackBerry KickStart clamshell. I have recently been reading plenty of smart phone rumors in many mobile phone site. After reading about the details on upcoming smartphone through the grapevine, I decide to feature a smartphone on this blog. Let's see if the Samsung SPH-i325 or Ace is really an ace in the smartphone world.

The Ace offers plenty of features and functionalities that are packed within a solid design. It's main selling point is the dual-mode CDMA/GSM capabilities that it offers. With this feature, the Samsung Ace is pretty much assured of having a loyal fan base.

Let's us explore this PDA"s physical attributes first. The Ace presents a very familiar QWERTY equipped block form factor like its predecessors in Samsung's PDA line up. To get service in most countries, GSM is still the best choice for globe-trotters (remember, it's the standard in Europe). But not just any GSM phone will do the trick. Of the four GSM bands--850, 900, 1800, and 1900--only 850 and 1900 are used in United States. Europe, on the other hand, only uses 900 and 1800. So in order to have a true world phone that will work in the most countries possible, make sure your phone is triband (GSM 900/1800/1900) or quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900). Your handset's bands are readily available from your carrier or the handset's manufacturer. If you don't have a compatible phone, you can rent one from your carrier.

Another advantage with a GSM phone is that if you have an unlocked phone, you can often buy a prepaid SIM card in the country where you're traveling. Available in per-minute increments, they are sold in varying amounts in convenience stores and phone shops. With a prepaid SIM card, you'll get a local number for your phone, which will help you avoid costly charges from your carrier (see below), which is particularly useful if you're calling within the country or region. But there's a trade-off. The main disadvantage is that because you've swapped out your normal SIM card, phone calls to your U.S. number will not go through. Also, calls back to the United States can be expensive.

Be advised that just because GSM is used in your destination and you have the correct phone, that doesn't mean your cell phone will operate without a hitch. To begin with, you'll need to have your phone activated for international roaming, so check with your carrier. Also, your carrier must have a roaming agreement with a carrier in each country on your itinerary. Though that won't be a problem for most travelers, roaming agreements vary by carrier, so it's absolutely essential that you check beforehand. And remember that as is the case in the United States, the quality of service will fluctuate as you move around. The same thing goes for CDMA users. Though you may find a CDMA network in your chosen country, make sure that your carrier has a relationship with a local operator and that your phone is activated for worldwide use.

Another issue to remember is that international calls do not come cheap; satellite calls from a cruise ship, for instance, will break the bank. But otherwise, roaming charges of $1 to $3 per minute are standard. And depending on the carrier and country, you might incur long-distance charges as well. Text messaging is always a cheaper option, but don't forget that messages can cost more than at home. And finally, you may have to pay a service charge to activate international dialing. In the following pages, we list exactly where the major U.S. carriers have roaming agreements, which phones they offer, and how much your calls will set you back.

Finally, when using your phone abroad, remember these additional points:

* Calls to voicemail and the operator will incur all applicable fees, but calls to your carrier's customer service are typically free.
* The method for making local calls in each country will vary, so make sure you know how to do so. Also, remember that emergency-dial numbers will be different from 911.
* Make sure you know how the folks back home and your friends abroad can reach you.
* When in a foreign country, you will have to use the appropriate country and area codes for calls back to the States or a third country.
* Your phone should automatically search for and select a network in each country, but you may have to do this yourself through your phone's menus. You also can try turning your phone off and on again.
* Free mobile-to-mobile minutes on the same carrier usually are not offered outside the United States.
* When roaming, the name of the local carrier will appear on your phone's display.
* Roaming charges will show up on your normal wireless bill, though they may take several weeks to do so.
* Not all data features will work the same way when you're abroad.
* Don't forget an electrical-plug converter for your charger.
